Electric Vehicle Charging 101

Everything you need to know about powering your electric vehicle at home and on the road.

Types of EV Charging

Understanding the different charging speeds helps you choose the right solution for your lifestyle.

Level 1 Charging

The slowest charging option using a standard 120V outlet. Provides only 3-5 miles of range per hour, requiring long overnight charging sessions that may not fully charge your vehicle.

Speed:3-5 mph
Time:8-20 hours

Level 2 Charging

The sweet spot for home and workplace charging. Uses 240V power for faster charging, adding 20-60 miles per hour.

Speed:20-60 mph
Time:4-8 hours

DC Fast Charging

Rapid charging for long trips. Can add 100-200 miles in just 20-30 minutes at highway charging stations.

Speed:100-200 mph
Time:20-30 minutes

Level 1 Charging

The slowest and most inconvenient charging option. Uses a standard 120V outlet and provides only 3-5 miles of range per hour of charging. Requires 8-20 hours for a meaningful charge, often not enough to fully charge larger EV batteries overnight. While no special installation is required, the extremely slow charging speed makes this impractical for most EV owners with regular driving needs.

Level 2 Charging

The sweet spot for home and workplace charging. Uses 240V power for faster charging, adding 20-60 miles per hour. Requires professional installation but offers the perfect balance of speed and cost. Available in both plug-in models (connected to a NEMA 14-50 outlet) and hardwired installations (directly wired to your electrical panel for a permanent, cleaner look). Most popular choice for home charging stations.

DC Fast Charging

Rapid charging for long trips and busy schedules. Can add 100-200 miles in just 20-30 minutes at highway charging stations. Perfect for road trips, quick top-ups, and when you need maximum charging speed. Found at shopping centers, highways, and commercial locations.

Plugin vs Hardwired Chargers

Level 2 home chargers come in two installation types. Understanding the difference helps you choose the right option for your home.

Plug-In Chargers

Connects to a dedicated NEMA 14-50 outlet (similar to what electric dryers use). Offers flexibility to unplug and move the charger if needed. Requires outlet installation by a licensed electrician.

Portable and removable

Can take with you if you move

Slightly easier installation

Hardwired Chargers

Permanently wired directly into your electrical panel. Provides a cleaner, more professional look with no visible outlet. Requires professional installation and electrical permit.

Cleaner, permanent installation

No outlet needed

Typically more power capacity
